Heat treatment involves heating, holding, and cooling to specified temperatures and at a specified rate to change the properties of an alloy in its solid state. The purpose of heat treatment operations and procedures is, for example, to alter mechanical and plastic properties by changing its structure. These operations are also performed using additional factors, such as mechanical or chemical treatment.

Types of heat treatment:

• Hardening – involves heating a given material to a specific temperature, known as the hardening temperature, maintaining it at this temperature for the time necessary to reshape the material's internal structure (mainly phase transformations), and then cooling it quickly. This treatment creates local stress concentrations in the material, typically resulting in increased strength properties: hardness, toughness, yield strength, elasticity, and abrasion resistance, at the expense of increased brittleness and decreased ductility and elongation.
• Annealing – involves heating the material to a specific temperature, maintaining it at that temperature, and then slowly cooling it. The goal of the treatment is to bring the material closer to equilibrium conditions.
